Discover the original-site of Expressionist painting in the castle-museum (Schloßmuseum), follow the trails of Kandinsky and the "Blue Rider" (Blauer Reiter) in the "Russians House" (Münterhaus), stroll through the pedestrian mall, a shopping-mile with southern charme where you can see the mountains from every standpoint. Besides its importance as an artistsvillage, Murnau is the center of events for the holiday-region "The Blue Land" around lake Staffelsee. Conventions and conferences with special ambiance take place in the Cultural & Convention Center where you can enjoy music festivals and exhibitions of the active artists' scene as well. Murnau is also well known for its genuine traditions and colorful festivals. Moreover, some of Bavaria's most known highlights as the King Ludwig castles are within easy reach and make Murnau an ideal destination for sightseeing.

Location / Getting there: 67 km to the south of Munich (45 minutes by car on the motorway A95 or one hour by train) and 25 km north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The museums"Schloßmuseum" and "Münterhaus" are gems of expressionist art. The Schloßmuseum displays the worldwide largest, permanent exhibition of paintings by Münter and a collection of the "Blue Rider" artwork. Kandinsky and Münter lived from 1909 to 1914 in a small villa. In the so called Russians House" (Münterhaus) the revolutionary development of non-representational painting took place, nowadays this memorial site attracts visitors from all over the world. The colorful historic houses in the center of Murnau form the special setting of the pedestrian mall where you forget the noise and the frantic pace of everyday life. Unspoilt nature can be found at lake Staffelsee and in the nature reserve of the "Murnauer Moos". The seven islands of the lake Staffelsee can be surrounded on the passenger ship "MS Seehausen". Enjoy bavarian specialities and international cuisine in cosy restaurants or taste the locally brewed beer in numerous beergardens counting among the most beautiful ones in whole Bavaria.
