The district town – situated only 20 km north of Munich - is known the world-over as the site of the first concentration camp in Bavaria erected by the Nazis in 1933. More than 206,000 prisoners from 31 nations were imprisoned in the camp over a period of twelve years. Today it is the supreme concern of the town of Dachau to keep alive the memories of the events of those times and ensure that they are never forgotten. The Concentration Camp Memorial Site, museum and archives, talks with contemporary witnesses and survivors, the annual contemporary history symposium, guided tours of the camp by specially trained staff and other organised events including events aimed at young people from Germany and abroad are dedicated to this very important task.
Another, largely unknown, side of Dachau is it's roll as one of the most significant German artist colonies at he end of the 19th century. Today the 1200 years old town is still characterized by the works of numerous artists. Worthwile museums and galleries, among them the Dachau Art Gallery with over 200 exhibits, invite to be visited.
