The High Castle, the Baroque abbey of St. Mang and the mosaic of rooftops are set picturesquely in the lush green countryside.
The town’s 700 years of history have left behind plenty of monuments and relics. In the winding streets of the medieval Old Town the Gothic gabled roofs of the tall patrician houses rub shoulders with the remains of the old city walls and Baroque churches. The High Castle overlooking the town was once the summer residence of the prince bishops of Augsburg; their former residential chambers now house an excellent art gallery, a branch of the great Bavarian State Painting Collections. Directly beneath the castle stand the magnificent Baroque buildings of the former Benedictine abbey of St. Mang. Inside travellers will find the Füssen Heritage Museum with a great collection of historic lutes and violins, splendid Baroque halls and the famous „Dance of the death“ of Füssen.
Füssen has more to offer than cultural attractions, however. The beautiful surrounding countryside is a paradise for walkers and hikers, and also offers opportunities for sporting activities of all kinds, in winter especially for Alpine skiing, cross country skiing and ice-skating. You can choose between the gentle rolling hills of the Allgäu, the wild mountain scenery of the Alps and the idyllic lake district in the Alpine foothills. Those interested in health holidays will find outstanding facilities at the health resort hotels and sanatoriums with a rich selection of health, fitness and wellness programmes.
There are always a wealth of high-class cultural events taking place in Füssen and the surrounding area.
